Stadler Trengove is a South African and serves as Principal Legal Officer to UNEP. He oversees three key units that form the Environmental Rule of Law Branch in the UNEP Law Division, aimed at addressing important environmental challenges and advancing the rule of law. These are the Montevideo Unit that spearheads legal education and capacity-building initiatives to empower Member States in tackling environmental issues; Frontiers in Environmental Law Unit that leads efforts to anticipate and address emerging issues in Environmental Law and the International Rules and Procedures Unit that provides legal and procedural support to multilateral environment meetings.
Mr Trengove is a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch and New College, Oxford, where he studied on a Rhodes Scholarship. He worked in private practice in Cape Town and in January 1998 joined United Nations Headquarters as a Legal Officer. His work over the last twenty-seven years has mainly been in the area of international peace and security, international criminal tribunals, the work of the General Assembly, Economic and Social Council and their subsidiary bodies as well as the work of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
He served as liaison officer for the Special Court for Sierra Leone, an international court set up in January 2002 to prosecute those most responsible for the serious violations of international humanitarian law and crimes against humanity committed in Sierra Leone and assisted in the arrest and transfer of the former President of Liberia, Charles Taylor to the Special Court in March 2006. Between November 2006 and August 2008, Mr. Trengove served as Senior Legal Officer to the UN peacekeeping operation in Khartoum, Sudan and provided legal support to the UN African Union Mission in Darfur.
Between 2008 and 2017, Mr. Trengove served at UN Headquarters, providing legal advice on the work of General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council as well as constitutional questions under the UN Charter. In his free time, he enjoys music.
