Youth group increases income through production of organic pesticide

The Adwoa Youth Group concentrates on growing sesame, sunflower and chillies. It has 30 members and was founded in 2013. It operates in an area with many child mothers. The group started as a drama and acting self-help group and has previously worked with Plan International on previous projects on child mothers.

Since involvement with SWITCH Africa Green on the project promoting eco-agriculture, the group has successfully eliminated the pink ball worms in August 2016 using organic pesticide, compared to the previous year when the whole crop was lost. There has since been a reduction in the use of inorganic pesticides and a significant increase in average yield per acre. Soil conservation practices have also been implemented including trenches, mulching, etc.
