Mauritius Completed Tourism

Greening the Mauritian tourism industry

Mauritius has developed a tourism industry that is admired throughout the world. The hospitality industry has rapidly emerged as one of the main income-earning sectors, accounting for 12% of gross domestic product. While larger hotels have the required expertise, logistics and facilities to compete at the international level, it is difficult for smaller hotels to do the same. Small and medium-sized hotels therefore need to group together to form clusters in order to achieve the same end results.

The survival of small and medium-sized hotels depends greatly on the cost of their operations, which involve high energy and water consumption, but is also a function of regional competition. Sustainability is vital for the development and improved performance of the tourism industry. No longer just looking for a nice room and sandy beaches, tourists have started to become more conscious of what is happening around them. Furthermore, the tourism industry is highly dependent on natural resources and the natural environment in which it operates.

This project aims to prepare local small and medium-sized hotels to take on the challenge of providing attractive products for tourists while meeting their expectations in terms of sustainability.
