Project Title: Operationalization of the Special Programme to support institutional strengthening at the national level to enhance the implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, the Minamata Convention on Mercury and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management
Project Summary: The objective of the Project is to support country-driven institutional strengthening at the national level, in the context of an integrated approach to address the financing of the sound management of chemicals and wastes, taking into account the national development strategies, plans and priorities of each country, to increase sustainable public institutional capacity for the sound management of chemicals and wastes throughout their life cycle. Institutional strengthening under the Special Programme will facilitate and enable the implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, the Minamata Convention and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).
Project Objectives:
The focus of this Project will be on the establishment and capacity enhancement of the institutions implementing/enforcing BRS conventions and SAICM in BiH, ultimately leading to the creation of BRS Coordination Team (BRS CT) for enhanced implementation of the BRS conventions and SAICM and eventually the Minamata Convention upon its ratification.
This will be carried out through the achievement of the following objectives:
- Policy support for development of BRS protocol and initiation of the BRS Coordination Team with aim of strengthening synergies of BRS and SAICM
- Improving BRS and SAICM synergic data sharing, compilation, management and reporting
- Capacity building and awareness raising for synergistic approach to BRS chemicals and waste management in line with SAICM in BiH
