Project Title: Institutional capacity building for the improvement and implementation of the synergy between the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Minamata conventions and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) in the Republic of Guinea

Project Summary: 

The project in Guinea is an initiative aimed at enhancing the management of chemicals and hazardous waste in Guinea. Despite the country being a party to major international conventions focused on the environmentally sound management of chemicals and hazardous waste, there are significant gaps in collaboration, regulatory frameworks, and institutional capacities that hinder effective implementation. This project seeks to address these shortcomings by adopting a unified strategy to strengthen the synergy between these conventions, ultimately protecting human health and the environment.

Project Objectives:

To contribute to sustainable socio-economic development and to strengthen synergy in the implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Minamata Conventions and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).

  • Update of the gaps and elaboration of a specific legal and regulatory text on chemicals and wastes for the implementation of the synergy of the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Minamata Conventions and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM)
  • Capacity Building of the National Chemicals Management Council and Executive Secretariat
  • Capacity building of the staff of the control and monitoring services to achieve synergy between the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Minamata Conventions and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM)
  • Elaboration of the national profile; report and Integrated Action Plan on hazardous waste management as a basis for the development of the of the Basel Convention
