Sound Chemicals and Waste Management Kenya (Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste)
Technical Highlights
Project Summary:
Kenya recognizes that sound management of chemicals (SMC) is an important way of protecting human health and the environment. SMC is addressed in eleven of seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) hence it is critical in addressing the agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development and the Kenya Vision 2030. In line with this, Kenya has developed a set of chemicals and waste-related sectoral regulatory frameworks that govern the chemical life cycle and the sustainable management when it becomes waste. Nevertheless, mainstreaming chemical management into the development agenda at the national and county levels is inadequate. This project aims to mainstream sound management of chemicals (SMC) and waste into key chemicals management institutions’ development agenda to prevent and control environmental and health concerns.
Project Objectives:
- Engaging with relevant stakeholders to mainstream SMC and their waste into their policies, strategies and programs.
- promote sustainable and innovative approaches to environmental protection through implementation of extended producer regulations and organizations as well as industry initiatives on SMC and waste.
- Increasing collaboration in the domestication and implementation of chemicals and waste MEAs and SAICM Post 2020 and managing a national Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR)
- Participating and outlining the UNEP Global Monitoring Plans for persistent Organic Pollutants POPs
- Implementing Kenya’s Monitoring Protocol to promote national engagement in science to policy and the linkages to human health and environment.
