Strengthening institutional capacity to reduce environmental and health risks from lead exposures and contamination in Rwanda
Technical Highlights
Rwanda leads the way on reducing harmful lead waste
Project Summary
This project aims to build common understanding on exposures and scope of contamination from lead, lead in paints, unsafe used lead acid batteries and other consumer products with lead content (automotive, petroleum product, modelling clays, toys, cosmetics and water). The project will also support the country to have reliable data and develop a management plan to prevent lead contamination and its associated impacts.
Project Objectives:
- Operationalizing a multi-sectoral stakeholder engagement group on lead exposures and contamination,
- Conducting a situational analysis to assess lead contamination/exposure and risks, sources, challenges, impacts, and circular opportunities,
- Establishing a national action plan for eliminating lead exposures and risk reduction,
- developing 5 regulatory instruments to enforce environmental sound management of lead exposure, pathways and pollution,
- Conducting capacity building and awareness raising on lead exposure and health risks for government agencies, the lead-acid batteries recycling industry, paint manufacturers and other relevant national stakeholders.
