Project Summary:  

The main objective of this project is to improve the management of hazardous chemicals and wastes in the Maldives through strengthening the institutional capacity of the Chemicals Management Unit of the Environment Management and Conservation Department and other relevant institutions. The project aims to develop the newly established Chemicals Management Unit and to enhance the capacities of relevant stakeholders and facilitate enforcement to enhance the sound management of chemicals and waste at the national, local, and private levels, through developing and improvement of national institutional capacity to monitor and control chemicals management. Maldives hopes to create a more coherent, consistent, and responsive mechanism to support the reporting requirements to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions as well as enhance compliance with national laws through enforcement of existing laws, regulations, policies, guidelines and standards. This is to be achieved through strengthening of the operational capacities of national stakeholders in hazardous chemicals and waste management and strengthening coordination among stakeholders at the national level for a continuous dialogue on hazardous waste management.  

Project Objectives: 

  1. Enhance the management of hazardous chemicals and wastes in the Maldives by strengthening the institutional capacity of the Chemicals Management Unit and other relevant entities. 
  1. Developing the newly established unit, improving the capacities of stakeholders, and facilitating enforcement to ensure sound management of chemicals and waste at national, local, and private levels. 
  1. Support national institutional capacity for monitoring and controlling chemicals management, creating a more coherent mechanism for reporting to international conventions and enhancing compliance with national laws. 
  1. Strengthening operational capacities, fostering coordination among stakeholders, and promoting awareness and training for effective implementation of the Hazardous Chemicals Management bill. 
  1. Improving the capacity of the chemical laboratory, enabling more efficient monitoring and enforcement strategies for the environmentally sound management of chemicals and hazardous waste.
