Key Figures:
- Budget: USD 1.6 million (co-finance USD 4.19 million)
- Executing Entity: Ministry of Environment, Cambodia
- Area rehabilitated: 75 ha of mangroves
- Beneficiaries: 2,000 households
- Fund: Least Developed Countries Fund (GEF)
- Project Sites: Koh Kong, Kampot, Kep and Sihanouk
- Timeframe: 2011-2016
Description:
On the coasts of Cambodia, climate change impacts such as rising temperatures, floods, and droughts are threatening coastal ecosystems and the well-being and livelihoods of local populations. Most communities along the coastal zone live below poverty line and rely on rain-fed agriculture and other coastal resources to support their livelihoods.
This project, executed by the Ministry of Environment of Cambodia with support from UNEP, is aiming to increase the resilience of coastal communities towards climate change impacts and risks by implementing ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA). To achieve this, the project rehabilitated 75 ha of degraded mangrove forests, reconstructed 7 km of dykes, set up 60 rainwater harvesting tanks and introduced alternative livelihoods, including integrated farming systems..
To strengthen the technical capacity and climate change knowledge, the project raised awareness regarding climate change, its impacts and adaptation mechanisms. The project also provided policy advice and produced vulnerability maps, climate risk assessments and other tools to improve adaptation planning at the national and local levels.
