COP 24 Cairo

The 24th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean (Barcelona Convention) and its Protocols took place from 2–5 December 2025 in Cairo, Egypt.

The meeting aimed to enhance the protection of the Mediterranean marine and coastal environment within the context of sustainable development.

COP24:

  • Reviewed progress achieved during the 2024–2025 biennium.
  • Considered strategic documents and adopted decisions, including the Programme of Work (PoW) and budget for 2026–2027.

Participants included accredited representatives of the 22 Contracting Parties (21 coastal Mediterranean countries and the European Union), as well as observers/MAP Partners and Intergovernmental Organizations.

Key Outcomes:

Over three days of intensive discussions, delegates at the 24th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention (COP24) addressed the Mediterranean region’s most pressing environmental challenges — from climate change and biodiversity loss to marine litter and pollution. The conference highlighted the importance of collaborative action in driving sustainable solutions and fostering long-term regional resilience.
