Zimbabwe’s planned national and chemical waste policy to drive real change

Project Summary

This project aims to enhance coherence, comprehensiveness, consistency and cooperation among the various actors in order to address gaps, overlaps and duplication in national chemicals and wastes management activities. It also seeks to enhance intersectional collaboration amongst the broad spectrum of national institutions that regulate chemicals in order to develop coherent risk reduction strategies. This will reduce chemicals and wastes impacts and assist the country in meeting its obligations under the Rotterdam, Stockholm, Basel and Minamata Conventions and the implementation of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) with management scenarios.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures to strengthen the legal and institutional infrastructures for the Sound Management of Chemicals and Wastes in Zimbabwe:

  • Proposed measure 1 involves establishing a national coordination committee and project management unit.
  • Proposed measure 2 involves reviewing, updating and/or development of chemicals and waste related legislation for endorsement by the Government of Zimbabwe.
  • Proposed measure 3 involves developing a national policy on the sound management of chemicals and waste, to be endorsed by Government of Zimbabwe officials
