INVEMAR Updates Assessment and Warns of Critical Gaps in Plastic Management in Cartagena and Barranquilla

A new assessment reveals critical gaps in waste management in Cartagena and Barranquilla, where plastic pollution is already impacting key ecosystems along Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

The Marine and Coastal Research Institute “José Benito Vives de Andréis” (INVEMAR) presented an updated assessment of public policies for plastic management in Colombia, with a focus on Cartagena and Barranquilla, as part of the Circular Cities, Beyond Plastic project. 

The initiative is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) through the Cartagena Convention Secretariat, and carried out in Colombia under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, in partnership with Conservation International.
