White River Fish Sanctuary 5th Anniversary

Mr. Christopher Corbin, Coordinator of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Caribbean Environmental Programme (CEP) – the UN organisation charged with protecting the Caribbean Sea - will be celebrating the milestone achievements of Jamaica’s own White River Fish Sanctuary (WRFS) at Fifth Anniversary event at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 8th February, 2023 at the WRFS offices in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.

Regional Meeting on Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW) to put spotlight on Caribbean Marine Biodiversity

The Wider Caribbean Region is in urgent need of preserving its treasured ecosystems and preventing further biodiversity loss which negatively impacts its growth and sustainable development targets. It is estimated that US$54.6 billion in economic value is directly linked to marine habitats.

Regional Eutrophication Workshop

OVERVIEW

From 13 – 14 December 2022, the Regional Eutrophication workshop will be held in Kingston Jamaica. Day 1 will consist of presentations and discussions at the office of the United Nations Environment Programme Cartagena Convention Secretariat, located at 14-20 Port Royal Street, Kingston. Activities on day 2 will involve a field trip to the parish of St. Ann.

75th Annual Meeting of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI 75)

The Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute and the Cartagena Convention Secretariat are co-hosts of the Caribbean Node of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML-Caribe).

The 75th Annual Meeting of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI 75) will be held in Fort Walton Beach, FL from 7th – 11th November 2022 at The Island Hotel.

GCFI is partnering with the Okaloosa County, the Destin – Fort Walton Beach Convention Center and Visitor Bureau to host GCFI75.

Calls for Proposals to support MPAs and marine litter management

Through funding from the Capacity Building Related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements in Africa, Caribbean, and the Pacific Countries (ACP MEAs III) programme, the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) is offering small grants to support organizations in the management of marine litter and capacity-building at site-specific marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Wider Caribbean Region.
