A virtual event to be held on the 7th September 2021 will outline the progresses and challenges in the fight against air pollution in Latin America and the Caribbean. The event is organized by the regional office of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and will take place on the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies.

Air pollution is responsible for 300,000 premature deaths a year in the Americas and is one of the greatest environmental health challenges in the world. Additionally, it has serious detrimental effects on climate, biodiversity and ecosystems, and quality of life in general.

The meeting will present the main findings of the regional report “Actions on Air Quality”, a new study that contributes to a global report of the same name that will be presented on September 7 at UNEP's global headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The executive summary of the regional document will be available on the day of the event.

At this meeting, both UNEP and PAHO will call for strengthening technical cooperation between countries and regional experts, as well as the exchange of experiences and good practices to move towards better air quality in Latin America and the Caribbean.
