• Overview

Trade and Environment Week 2020, taking place at the World Trade Organization (WTO) from 16-20 November is a global forum to:

  • explore issues at the forefront of the trade and environment agenda;
  • showcase successful experiences on how to make global trade more sustainable, resilient and inclusive; and
  • exchange concrete ideas on the role of trade and the WTO in building back greener and better from the COVID-19 crisis.

It comprises a series of events and workshops that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is engaged with, including a high-level session co-hosted by UNEP and the WTO Secretariat, and a Stakeholder Event co-hosted with the Graduate Institute, Chatham House and the Geneva Trade Platform. Events throughout the week are held in conjunction with the Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE) where UNEP will be presenting its new report: Sustainable Trade in Resources: Trade Global Material Flows and Circularity.

This high-level session, which is organized by WTO and UNEP as part of their collaboration to promote dialogue between the trade and environment communities, brings together leaders from across the globe to identify concrete actions for sustainable, resilient and inclusive trade.

Some findings of the new UNEP/International Resource Panel report Sustainable Trade in Resources: Trade, Global Material Flows and Circularity, will be shared during this event. Read the fact sheet here.

This event serves as the launch of the communication on trade and environmental sustainability at the WTO. The objective of the communication is to create a structured discussion, beginning in early 2021. The structured discussions will allow interested WTO Members, as well as non-WTO experts (e.g. academics, NGOs, IOs and the private sector), to come together to explore the nexus between trade and environmental sustainability.

Organized by The Geneva Trade Platform, UNEP Environment and Trade Hub, the Global Governance Centre, and Chatham House Hoffmann Centre for Sustainable Resource Economy, this event brings together stakeholders other than government for a forward-looking WTO agenda on environmental sustainability and trade.
