Welcome to the UNEP Digital Transformation (DT) subprogramme, a dynamic team motivated to accelerate and scale environmental sustainability through the strategic application of data and digital technologies. Our mission is to harness the power of digital innovation to address the urgent challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, while mitigating the environmental risks associated with increasing digitalization.
Our Vision
At the core of our subprogramme lies a visionary perspective. We aspire to create a world where the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is empowered by digital advancements to more effectively address the triple planetary crises and serve its member states, partners and stakeholders. Our approach is anchored in user-centricity and future-oriented thinking, using agile methodologies to craft and enhance digital products and services. This vision harmonizes seamlessly with the objectives set forth in the Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) 2022-2025.
Our Strategic Actions
To achieve our vision, we pursue three strategic actions:
1. Catalyzing a Digital Ecosystem for the Planet:
We're committed to catalyzing a robust digital ecosystem of data and platforms. By setting data standards and developing digital platforms, we facilitate timely and transparent monitoring of environmental aspects within the global community's 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This empowers us to provide innovative solutions, insightful analysis and actionable recommendations at the global, regional and national levels.
2. Convening partnerships and multi-lateral engagements to influence markets, supply chains and consumer behaviours:
Collaboration is key to transformation, enabling knowledge sharing and access to the best technologies available. We leverage partnerships to influence decision-making among governments, businesses and individual consumers. Through these partnerships, we aim to magnify our impact, driving positive environmental change while enhancing human well-being.
3. Facilitating country-level engagement to strengthen digital literacy, capacity, and governance:
Our commitment extends to supporting country-level needs within both regional and global contexts. We work with nations to identify priority use cases, shape policies and build capacities that advance national environmental sustainability goals.
