Buildings

We support the decarbonisation, resilience and increased circularity of buildings and construction to provide benefits to our economy and wellbeing.

Efficiency policies in buildings and constructions can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% in developed countries, and up to 80% in developing countries.

While buildings currently account for 12 Gigatons of GHG globally, their emissions reduction potential amounts to up to 2 Gt (IPCC, 2023). Yet, the sector is still not on track to achieve its full mitigation potential. Today, it accounts for around 37% of energy and process-related CO2 emissions and over 34% of energy demand globally (UNEP, 2022). With 50% of the buildings standing in 2050 yet to be built, urgent shifts in the way we build and use our buildings is crucial (UNEP, 2017).
