Mitigation Case Studies

Through the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) has catalysed and verified action to mitigate emissions across four continents. The system draws data from more than 30 satellite instruments to alert companies and governments of major emission events and enable rapid response. 

As of April 2026, IMEO has documented 41 cases of mitigation. These examples of mitigation efforts, prompted and verified by MARS, demonstrate that immediate action is possible across diverse geographies and contexts.

However, while the system’s capabilities and notifications have grown, responses and action by companies and governments have not kept pace. Response rates to MARS notifications indicate there is a clear opportunity for governments and industry to engage and increase mitigation action.
