ABOUT
At the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development in May 2009, it was agreed to establish a global mechanism to bring together and harmonize what was perceived to be fragmented efforts to address the nutrient challenge amongst a great many number of stakeholders. These included government, research and academia, agricultural and fertilizer producer organizations in the private sector, regional and international intergovernmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations.
The Global Partnership on Nutrient Management (GPNM) was formed and committed to promoting effective nutrient management to achieve the twin goals of food security through increased productivity and conservation of natural resources and the environment.
GPNM is one of the pillars of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA).
ECOLOGICAL STATUS AND TRENDS i.e. STATUS
To translate the work of the GPNM from the global level to the national level, Regional Platforms, represented by lead government agencies with responsibility for agriculture, oceans, and natural resources conservation, along with regional and international support agencies have been established. The GPNM Asia Platform was launched in 2010 in Delhi, India, and the GPNM Caribbean Platform was launched in 2012 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
WHY DOES IT MATTER
To fully realize the benefits of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers—including their role in enhancing food security—countries require access to better information and comprehensive assessments of the interconnected impacts of these nutrients. They also need knowledge to support integrated nutrient management approaches, along with practical tools and training to address the root causes of unsustainable agricultural practices. This includes guidance on how to apply nutrients efficiently to prevent excess release into the environment.
By fostering a multi-stakeholder approach that connects governments, academia, the private sector, and civil society, the GPNM seeks to elevate the global visibility of the Nutrient Challenge and drive the implementation of effective solutions. In doing so, improved nutrient management can become a key contributor to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, delivering wide-ranging environmental, social, and economic benefits.
WHAT WE DO
The GPNM supports its members by maximizing the role of nutrient management in achieving food security, reducing nutrient pollution, and advancing sustainable global development through the following actions:
- Enhancing understanding of the nutrient life cycle and its socio-economic and environmental impacts through observation and modelling;
- Building knowledge by sharing lessons learned to inform analysis of policies, business models, and technological options for sustainable nutrient use;
- Establishing a global knowledge base on policy experiences and how they can be adapted to national contexts;
- Raising awareness and disseminating information to strengthen the capabilities of partners;
- Facilitating new initiatives and projects that support government efforts to reform or develop policy frameworks for sustainable nutrient management;
- Identifying research, education, and extension needs to address knowledge gaps;
- Providing a collaborative network to foster cooperation among members in addressing the nutrient challenge.
