UNEP plays a central role in global environmental governance, supporting countries in addressing environmental challenges across ecosystems, from land and freshwater to the ocean and coastal environments. Its work on marine and coastal issues contributes to the protection of ocean biodiversity and to broader goals for climate stability, food security, livelihoods and human well-being.
With over five decades of experience, UNEP provides technical and policy support on integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), marine spatial planning (MSP) and ecosystem monitoring through initiatives such as the GEMS Ocean Programme. It offers legal expertise through the Montevideo Environmental Law Programme and serves as an implementing agency for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters portfolio. UNEP also administers Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans, fostering cooperation among countries that share marine ecosystems.
This combination of legal, scientific and institutional experience positions UNEP to support Member States in advancing the ratification and future implementation of the BBNJ Agreement.
