Le PNUE/PAM a joué un rôle déterminant dans l’introduction d’une interdiction des sacs en plastique à usage unique en Tunisie. L’interdiction, entrée en vigueur le 1er mars 2020 pour les supermarchés en vertu du décret n° 32 du 16 janvier 2020, interdit la fabrication, l’importation et l’utilisation de sacs plastiques conventionnels à usage unique.

La vingt et unième Réunion des Parties contractantes à la Convention de Barcelone et à ses Protocoles (COP21) a eu lieu du 2 au 5 décembre 2019 à Castel dell’ Ovo, un château médiéval en bord de mer à Naples (Italie). Le texte final du rapport de la COP21 ainsi que ceux des 14 décisions adoptées par les Parties contractantes sont en cours d’élaboration.

The Mediterranean is polluted by an estimated 730 tonnes of plastic waste every day.   Plastics account for between 95 to 100% of total floating litter, and more than 50% of seabed litter.   Single-use plastics represent more than 60% of the total recorded marine litter on beaches.

The Mediterranean is home to more than 17,000 marine species.   Between 20-30% of species are endemic (highest rate of endemism globally).
