Joseph Nguthiru founded the Kenyan startup HyaPak, which produces biodegradable packaging from the pulp of water hyacinths, an invasive weed that covers much of Kenya’s Lake Naivasha. The packaging includes seedling bags that decompose directly into the soil, parcel packaging for courier services and carton linings that keep food fresh without cold storage.

To date, HyaPak has cleared 8 hectares of hyacinth from Lake Naivasha and created dozens of green jobs for community members whose livelihoods have been impacted by the plant. By turning an environmental menace into a resource, HyaPak is restoring ecosystems, reducing plastic waste and offering circular economy solutions with global potential.

Nguthiru studied water and environmental engineering at Egerton University in Kenya. He has been recognized as an Obama Leader and a Presidential Awardee for Best Innovator in Kenya. He has been included on the Africa 40 Under 40 list and named a Meta Top 25 Under 25 Young Climate Prize winner.
