As part of the GEF-funded  “Circular Cities Beyond Plastics” program focused on reducing marine plastics and plastic pollution in Caribbean coastal cities through a circular economy approach, the Industry Roundtable (IRT) Support Team is pleased to invite 6 multi-stakeholder IRT City Teams from Barranquilla and Cartagena, Colombia; Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Colón and Panama City, Panama to participate in an “Art of Stakeholder Engagement Workshop: Planning Industry Roundtable Dialogues on Circular Economies” to be held from 21-22 May 2026 in Panama City.

The world faces multiple planetary crises, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution – often referred to as the “Triple Planetary Crises”. Addressing these challenges requires integrated and comprehensive solutions, as solving the challenges separately in a “one-by-one” approach is not sufficient given the urgency of the situation. Furthermore, some solutions to one of the crises may negatively impact others. And some solutions can – if designed and implemented well – contribute to addressing several crises all at once.

The ‘Beat Plastic Pollution JA’ competition was kicked off by the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP) and partners on World Environment Day, June 5. It is a joint United Nations initiative aimed at highlighting the urgent need for action to reduce plastic pollution, which is a major challenge in the Caribbean and globally. The competition, will run until June 23, sees Jamaican students demonstrating “the urgent need to work across the plastic life cycle and articulate different strategies to reduce and reuse plastic”

It is celebrated by millions of people across the world. World Environment Day 2023 is hosted by Côte d'Ivoire and supported by the Netherlands and will focus on solutions to plastic pollution.

The World Migratory Bird Day campaign will focus on the topic of water and its importance for migratory birds. Water is fundamental to life on our planet. The vast majority of migratory birds rely on aquatic ecosystems during their life cycles. Inland and coastal wetlands, rivers, lakes, streams, marshes, and ponds are all vital for feeding, drinking, or nesting, and also as places to rest and refuel during their long journeys.
