The GEF Biodiversity Add-On Project has 3 main objectives: (i) Objective 1: To establish and operationalise a CHM to improve information sharing and management and to enhance implementation of Article 18 on scientific and technical cooperation within and between countries, for effective implementation of the CBD. The CHM will help Uganda to report on progress towards the CBD 2010 target through better identification, compilation and effective use of information on biodiversity. (ii) Objective 2: To carry out an Assessment on capacity for several biodiversity components including: a) Role of Ingenious Knowledge and Practices in the Conservation of Biodiversity and Develop Guidelines for Sustainable Use of Biodiversity to support and strengthen management of biodiversity resources as well as monitoring programmes by the various government institutions. b) Initial assessment and monitoring programs, including taxonomy iii. Objective 3:Carry out any additional assessment of capacity development needs required for effective implementation of the NBSAP. In particular, emerging issues on Biodiversity conservation in the areas of oil and gas exploration are important in Uganda and needs concerned with these areas will be elaborated on.

The development objective is to contribute to the effective protection and sustainable use of the water and land resources of the Amazon Basin, based upon the principles of integrated water resources management (IWRM), and manage the effects of climate change (CC) within Amazonian communities in a coordinated and coherent way. This will be accomplished by the eight signatory countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty, within the framework of the ACTO, through a program of strategic interventions. Project’s specific objective is to elaborate a Strategic Action Program (SAP) for the Amazon Basin and create the necessary enabling social-economic environment for the future implementation of the SAP, inclusive of strategic measures relating to adaptation by the countries to the effects of global climate change on the Basin.

The Projects development objective is to accelerate the development and utilization of geothermal resources in the Rift Valley as a pathway to low carbon development in the region. The Program’s global objective is to facilitate reduction of the growth rate of GHG emissions in the region through geothermal energy development to produce electricity.

To expand protected area coverage of globally significant marine biodiversity and increase the management effectiveness of the national marine protected area network across the Bahamian archipelago

The overall objective (goal) of the project is to pilot nationally-driven integrated processes and approaches to reporting to the three Rio Conventions (CBD, UNCCD and UNFCCC). More specifically, the project will (a) develop integrated approaches to data collection/analysis and information management of relevance to the three Rio Conventions; (b) increase synergies in the process of reporting to the three Conventions without compromising COP decisions in this regard; and (c) contribute to improved overall planning and decision-making processes at the country-level related to the implementation of these Conventions.
