Regional multi-stakeholder workshop: Anglophone West Africa sub-regional action planning on mercury use in artisanal and small scale gold mining, from 8-10 June 2011 in Nigeria.
Purpose of the meeting
To enhance regional collaboration and coordination through exchange of experiences and lessons learned on a regional level To raise the awareness of governments and stakeholders To build momentum for regional and national action plan
The two focus countries with developed national strategies have highlighted their experiences and a regional action plan with recommendations has been prepared as an outcome of the meeting. The conclusion meeting will continue to strengthen regional collaboration and capacity by inviting representatives from all ASGM countries in the region.

The Social and Financial Challenges of Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining meeting was organized for the international community and stakeholders to highlight changing global policies on mercury in light of the future global mercury treaty. Participants were invited to consider their possible role in developing and supporting an effective global solution in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector.

Presentations focussing on mercury given at the meeting of the United Nation Commission on Sustainable Development.
The workshop was conceived to set the impetus for the development of national artisanal and small-scale gold mining strategic plans for Philippines and Cambodia which will supplement regional efforts to protect health and the environment from mercury in the sector.

Sur invitation de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour le Développement Industriel (ONUDI), s’est tenu, du 08 au 10 décembre 2009 au Grand Hôtel de Bamako (Mali), l’Atelier sous- régional d’information des pays de l’Afrique de l’Ouest francophone sur les problèmes liés à l’orpaillage. Cet atelier a été organisé dans le cadre du Programme Mondial pour le Mercure du Programme des Nations Unies pour l’Environnement.
