Second meeting of the Eliminating Mercury Skin Lightening Products project stakeholders group will take place online on Tuesday 21 May 2024 from 2pm to 4pm CET.  

The event will provide an opportunity to learn about updates and lessons learned from the GEF project on “Eliminating Mercury Skin Lightening Products”  and hear from stakeholders regarding their experiences.

Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM)

Dans le cadre de l’Article 7 et Annexe C de la Convention de Minamata, et de la mise en œuvre de leur projet Plan d’Actions National (PAN) pour la réduction, et si possible, l’élimination de l’utilisation du mercure dans le secteur de l’EMAPE d’or, huit pays ont pris part à un voyage d’étude d’Afrique de l’Ouest organisé au Togo en mai 2023.

Les pays participants ont pu partager leurs connaissances et données sur les projets PANs et les stratégies nationales qui en ont découlé, mais également aborder certaines des thématiques phares, communes à la région.

The First meeting of the Eliminating Mercury Skin Lightening Products project stakeholders group took place online on Tuesday 28 November 2023.

Skin lightening products often contain potentially harmful ingredients, including steroids, hydroquinone and toxic mercury compounds, that not only damage the skin but can lead to serious health concerns.

Products

Using cosmetics to inhibit the body’s production of melanin, leading the skin to appear lighter, is a centuries-old practice that continues in many parts of the world today. However, consumers are often unaware that these products contain a host of harmful chemicals including mercury, causing skin rashes and discoloration, scarring, nervous, digestive and immune system damage, as well as anxiety and depression.

The Mercury supply and storage Partnership Area held it annual meeting on Friday 13 October 2023 in an online setting.
