Dans le cadre de l’Article 7 et Annexe C de la Convention de Minamata, et de la mise en œuvre de leur projet Plan d’Actions National (PAN) pour la réduction, et si possible, l’élimination de l’utilisation du mercure dans le secteur de l’EMAPE d’or, huit pays ont pris part à un voyage d’étude d’Afrique de l’Ouest organisé au Togo en mai 2023.

Les pays participants ont pu partager leurs connaissances et données sur les projets PANs et les stratégies nationales qui en ont découlé, mais également aborder certaines des thématiques phares, communes à la région.

The Partnership Area on mercury in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining organized an information sharing session on 26 June in an online setting. The event presented updates of ongoing U.S Department of State granted mercury related projects in the ASGM sector and provided an opportunity to exchange on potential synergies.

The Global Mercury Partnership organised an information sharing session on Minamata Initial Assessments (MIAs): latest trends, key findings and data analysis tools, on Tuesday 27 September 2022, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm CEST, in an online setting.

Under the first segment of the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention (COP4 - 1 to 5 November 2021), the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership Area on Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) and the Minamata Convention Secretariat co-hosted on 3 November 2021 a side event on the sound management of mercury-containing tailings in artisanal and small-scale gold mining.

The UNEP Global Mercury Partnership and its Area of work on Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining organized on Thursday 17 June 2021,  an online webinar to discuss gender mainstreaming into National Action Plans (NAPs).

Webinar for the Spanish speaking countries in Latin America and Caribbean region.

The webinar presented the global status and progress made on NAP development and reviewed the available tools and assistance from the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership and others. Honduras and Ecuador shared the challenges that national teams have encountered during NAP development process or related projects (e.g. planetGOLD). Finally, participants shared their experiences and discussed possible solutions, including with respect to the future NAP implementation and sector transformation.

Development of National Action Plans (NAPs) for artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is an obligation under Article 7 of the Minamata Convention for each Party that determines that mercury use in ASGM in its territory is “more than insignificant”. Recognizing that the sector is closely linked to complex economic, social and environmental issues, the Convention allows flexible, country-specific solutions through the development of NAP to reduce and where feasible eliminate mercury use in the ASGM sector.
