Overview
The Waste Management Area (WMA) has established a Consultation Desk to support stakeholders in addressing challenges related to the environmentally sound management of mercury waste, in line with Article 11 of the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
The Consultation Desk leverages the extensive expertise of WMA partners, including waste treatment companies, governments, and technical experts.
Scope of support
The Consultation Desk provides:
- Technical advice on mercury waste management
- Sharing of best practices and existing guidelines
- Identification of appropriate technologies and service providers
- Facilitation of connections with relevant experts and organizations
Note: The Consultation Desk is a voluntary initiative and does not provide financial assistance.
The WMA maintains a roster of partners whose expertise can be leveraged to support stakeholders in addressing mercury waste management challenges. More information including the roster of partners is available here.

How it Works
- Inquiry
Stakeholders seeking support are invited to contact the WMA Secretariat by email (wastemanagement@exri.co.jp) .
- Submit a request describing the issue
- Attach the Issue Identification Sheet to provide details on the specific challenge
- Consultation
- The Secretariat reviews the request
- Relevant WMA partners and organizations are consulted
- Stakeholders may be invited to present their challenges at WMA meetings for further discussion
- Match-making for action
Where appropriate, the WMA facilitates follow-up actions, which may include:
- Business-to-business collaboration
- Government-to-government cooperation
- Participation in funded initiatives (e.g. GEF, SIP)

The service is open to:
- Governments and public authorities
- Waste management operators
- Industry stakeholders
- NGOs and research institutions
- Other stakeholders involved in mercury waste management
