A major barrier to the transition away from mercury use in artisanal and small-scale gold mining is the typical lack of formalization in the sector. The planetGOLD programme is piloting innovative and holistic approaches to formalization, such as Jurisdictional and Landscape Approaches. These approaches utilize a cross-sectoral collaborative strategy across a specific geographic area, like a watershed or forest, or a specific political area or jurisdiction — involving multiple stakeholders to establish sustainable land use across entire regions.
In this episode, discover how the planetGOLD Guinea project is working to test Landscape Approaches in the municipality of Siguiri with the aim of clearly defining areas for mining, agriculture, and livestock n order to reduce conflict and protect natural resources.
