This report outlines options for remediation of selected potentially contaminated areas around the Khaidarkan mine site and town, including sludge pond, slag heaps, and tailings pond. Remediation approaches that are sketched out in this document are based on the initial assessment by international and local experts. Remediation measures will have several important benefits.

This overview document outlines the situation regarding the world’s last known exporting mercury mine at Khaidarkan in southern Kyrgyzstan.

With the goal of constructing and maintaining an overarching and integrated community-wide framework to properly manage mercury and adequately control its adverse environmental impacts, the community strategy describes a range of actions for reducing emissions, reducing supply and demand, and addressing surpluses and reservoirs of mercury. 

The general objective of this project is to identify and manage mercury emissions in Chile in order to protect human health and the environment.

To fulfill this general objective, the project foresees the implementation of the following activities, among others:

• Identifying the main sources of mercury emission and release in Chile.

The report is based on information provided by governments and other stakeholders, as well as publicly available comprehensive trade statistics for mercury.

In this report the information available in the extended impact assessment is updated and complementary information is also provided, in particular with regard to the newer member states of the EU-25. 

Concise International Chemical Assessment Documents (CICADs) are the latest in a family of publications from the International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS) — a cooperative programme of the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

This analysis is intended to support policy recommendations that will appear in the European Commission Mercury Strategy, which should also contain the main elements of a sustainability impact assessment (SIA), to be published in 2004 under the lead of the Commission’s Directorate General for Environment, DG Environment.
