The Mercury Waste Management project is amended by a technical, chemical and economic assessment of mercury-containing and mercury-contaminated tailings from the mining sector in developing countries. A feasibility study was undertaken in some developing countries that produced/produce precious metals or mercury and are left with mercury-containing tailings.

In response to a recommendation of the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership Advisory Group in 2009, the partnership area has updated a 2004 database of global mercury cell chlorine capacity. According to data compiled, some 100 facilities in 44 nations today have some industrial mercury cell chlorine capacity.

The annual meeting of the Mercury-Containing Products Partnership Area was held via teleconference on 24 September 2009. The teleconference was hosted by the Partnership lead, Dr. Maria Doa of the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA), from EPA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

This report is part of the overall Kyrgyzstan Primary Mercury Mining Project funded by the Government of Norway, Switzerland and the United States of America and being carried out as a partnership between UNITAR, UNEP, and Zoï Environment Network. 

The goal of this research is to assist the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in a decisionmaking scenario to move forward in phasing out (replacing) the primary mercury production at the Khaidarkan Mercury Plant in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.

Ultimately, limiting mercury supply globally will encourage the transition to alternative technologies in areas where mercury is still used.
