This course explores the different forms of mercury and its compounds with their respective sources, environmental distribution, toxicological aspects, and prevention measures. In addition, it introduces the Minamata Convention and Resolution 67.11 (2014) of the World Health Assembly (WHA), and its considerations on public health aspects related to mercury.

The objective of the present article is to review global studies on environmental mercury poisoning of children and get perspective on its impact on pediatric health by assessing the progress made in diagnosis, treatment, prevention and monitoring of the adverse effects.

Our October issue provides an overview of recent, current and forthcoming activities, especially in the context of the upcoming Fifth Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention.

The Partnership Areas of work on Mercury cell Chlor-alkali Production and Mercury Waste Management hosted a joint webinar on the sound management and elimination of mercury and mercury waste in the chlor-alkali sector, on 16 February 2023.

This report builds upon the previous work of the Zero Mercury Working Group (ZMWG) in exposing the toxic trade in skin lightening products (SLPs) laced with mercury. SLPs are sold globally via online platforms and, in this particular case, the focus is on illegal SLP sales by Amazon.com in the United States.
