Working with the finance sector and governments to catalyse action across the financial system to deliver more sustainable economies.

UNEP works with governments and banking, insurance and investment sectors to unlock finance for sustainable transformation, while enhancing solutions for climate, nature, pollution, and inclusive societies. This also promotes financing for sustainable consumption, production, and circularity approaches.

UNEP addresses this by:

→ Supporting sustainable finance strategies which help policymakers and regulators design roadmaps, taxonomies, and frameworks that align economic and financial systems with environmental goals.

→ Engaging financial institutions through initiatives such as the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB) and the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), which guide sustainability action, while addressing risks, opportunities and impacts.

→ Supporting global initiatives which accelerate climate-aligned finance such as the Net-Zero Asset Owners, Net-Zero Banking, and Net-Zero Export Credit Agency Alliances and the Forum for Insurance Transition to Net Zero (FIT).
