Project Summary

"The project aims to strengthen the institutional capacity to plan, monitor and coordinate the implementation of policies, strategies and national programmes for the sound management of chemicals and waste. This will be done by developing and conducting public awareness programs on management, handling and disposal of chemicals and waste; involving the public in waste management through plastic recycling facilities; and establishing an integrated information exchange platform for chemicals and waste that is accessible by all the stakeholders and the public.

The project will be implemented in partnership a wide range of stakeholders including local NGOs, communities, and local authorities, building the capacity of existing structures to ensure sustainability of the project initiatives. The Gender Policy of 2015 and the National Plan of Action to Combat Gender-Based Violence in Malawi (2014 - 2020) will guide and ensure gender considerations are incorporated and applied."

Specifically, the project aims to:

  •  Conduct public awareness program on lifecycle management of chemicals and waste;
  •  Implement a pilot plastics recycling project by strengthening existing waste transfer stations through empowerment of a local NGO and communities; and
  •  Establish an integrated information management system for chemicals and waste that is accessible by all the stakeholders and the public;"
