Strengthening national capacities for the integral management of chemicals in Peru

Project Summary

The project seeks to implement the regulatory framework for the sound management of chemicals, beginning with a gap analysis and a legal technical evaluation.  The project will strengthen the capacities of the public and private sectors to participate in the implementation of the GHS; identify, design and implement a National Registry of Chemical Substances that are commercialized in the country, to ensure access to updated information for awareness raising and decision making; provide specific measures for the reduction and management of risks to health and the environment from hazardous chemical substances. In addition, risk assessments will be conducted for chemical substances identified as priorities at the national level, along with technical guidelines for their correct formulation, preparation and implementation. The implementation of the regulatory framework will be accompanied by a communication plan, taking into account to the target audience and considering a gender perspective.  

Project Objectives

"The project outcomes are the following:

  • A National Registry of Chemical Substances (RENASQ), to incorporate information and communication mechanisms for health and the environmental hazards associated with chemical products.
  • Guidelines for the formulation, elaboration and implementation of specific measures for the reduction and management of risks to health and / or the environment, and risk assessments of the chemicals of concern.
  • Strengthened technical-legal capacities at the multisectoral level on the application of the GHS for its optimal implementation through the modular approach, as well as the guidelines previously developed within the framework of this project.
  • Strengthened awareness and sensitization according to the target audience, related to the intrinsic hazards of chemical substances, as well as measures for their proper management according to the socio-cultural context of the country.
  • Draft articles on management mechanisms for chemical substances, to be considered for the formulation of the Draft Regulation document for the Law Proposal on Sound Management of Chemicals"
