Current Projects

1.To review and propose changes and improvements in existing legislation to assist the conservation and sustainable utilization of biological diversity in Barbados, especially with regard to sectoral integration, incentive measures and land-use planning; 2. To review and collate existing information on endemic and indigenous species of Barbados, both within Barbados and in other countries, and to develop a programme for monitoring key indicators of biodiversity; including to develop a terrestrial invertebrate collection and undergo associated training; and 3. To develop and activate a national Clearing House Mechanism (CHM) of the CBD to better participate in the CBD process and to raise public awareness of biodiversity in Barbados.

Integrate Biodiversity Considerations & Ecosystem Services into Forest Management and Land UsePlanning (4 Pine Islands: Grand Bahamas, New Providence, Abaco and Andros)

To Assist GEF-Eligible Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to prepare and make timely submission of their Third National Reports on measures that each party has taken to implement the Protocol in line with Article 33.

To strengthen institutional capacity for the implementation and monitoring of international conventions as a follow-up to the National Capacity Self Assessment (NCSA) of St. Lucia and to better integrate environmental concerns, and the value of ecosystems, into its broader development frameworks

To facilitate the ratification and early implementation of the Minamata Convention by providing key national stakeholders in Brazil with the scientific and technical knowledge and tools needed for that purpose

Strengthened coordination of information and monitoring systems for management of water resources based on an SLM approach

To strengthen the capacity for implementation of the updated POPs Global Monitoring Plan (GMP) and to create the conditions for sustainable monitoring of POPs in the Latin American and Caribbean Region

To support thirty nine (39) Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) prepare and submit good quality initial biennial update reports to the UNFCCC that comply with the convention's reporting obligation

Nine countries prepare and submit intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Agreement and have institutional arrangements in place that support the INDC process

Increased management effectiveness and sustainable use of the North East Coast’s natural resource base to generate multiple global environmental benefits.

Enhanced financing and management of protected areas through innovations in renewable energy capacity and arrangements

To strengthen national capacities and assist Panama in the alignment of its National Action Plan to Combat Desertification (NAP) with UNCCD 10-Year Strategy and in complying with UNCCD reporting and review process

Nine countries prepare and submit intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Agreement and have institutional arrangements in place that support the INDC process

To support 16 countries parties Countries in meeting its obligation to the UNCCD Convention through Alignment of NAP with the 10 – Year Strategy and reporting and review process for the UNCCD

To facilitate access to GEF funding by Jamaica for Enabling Activities to meet its obligations under the UNCCD : a) Development and alignment of NAP with 10 – Year Strategy and b) Reporting and Review process.

To support the development of national fuel economy policies in 20 countries, 6 countries through GEF-5 STAR Allocations and 14 without GEF funding, using existing tools developed with GEF-4 support (examples are the fuel economy baseline calculation methodology and online GFEI toolkit). In addition, to support coordination of the 20 country projects at the regional level to ensure that results are disseminated to other countries within the region. This will result in reduced vehicle fleet CO2 emissions in these 20 countries inline with the Global Fuel Economy Initiative's target of a 50% improvement of the overall global fleet fuel economy by 2050.

Develop and implement a participatory strategy to sustainably conserve biodiversity engaging communities, government and NGO participation.

To support Saint Lucia in meeting its obligation to the UNCCD Convention through Alignment of NAP with the 10 – Year Strategy and reporting and review process for the UNCCD

To facilitate access to GEF funding by Dominica for Enabling Activities to meet its obligations under the UNCCD: a) NAP development in line with 10 – Year Strategy and b) Reporting and review process

To achieve an effective application of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, by implementing Panama's national biosafety regulatory framework and developing national capacities to properly handle Living Genetically Modified Organisms (LMO) for the safeguard of biodiversity.

To assist the Government of Brazil to strengthen its technical capacity in supporting the implementation of its mitigation actions for greenhouse gas emissions in key economic sectors (industry, energy, industry, transportation, household and services, LULUCF and other cross-sector alternatives) in Brazil (including costs) as identified in the Brazilian National Policy and Plan on Climate Change.

The project will provide financial and technical support for the preparation of National Communications (NCs) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 14 non-Annex I Parties that have completed preparation of their current national communications.

To accelerate transformation of the lighting market in Peru through enhanced promotion and implementation of the utilization of energy saving lamps (ESLs) and the phasing-out of incandescent lamp (ILs) imports and sales.

To mainstream agricultural biodiversity into the management of the Cuban MaB Reserve System
