Within the framework of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) project on dental amalgam, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) organised a regional workshop in Montevideo on March 4 and 5, 2026.
Uruguay shared its experience in phasing out dental amalgam with other Latin American countries. In 2018, Uruguay eliminated dental amalgam from oral health services covered by the country’s Comprehensive Health Care Plan, and since 2020, no dental amalgam imports have been recorded.
