UN Environment and the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) organized the first National Biosafety Clearing-House (BCH) capacity-building workshop in Rwanda in March 2018. The objective of the workshop was to reach a common understanding among in-country biosafety stakeholders about the format of the Biosafety Clearing-House records and to enhance national competencies to use it.
Through the Biosafety Clearing House initiative, UN Environment provides training to government representatives, industry, importers, producers, distributors, researchers, farmers and major food and feed companies, civil society, and media on:
- The common format of BCH records as well as the procedures for registering and publishing biosafety-related decisions
- The technical national Biosafety Clearing-House responsibilities, and impact on the institutional processes for creating and registering BCH information and making biosafety-related decisions
- Identification of national procedures and operational linkages to gather information to be put on the Biosafety Clearing-House in line with national biosafety frameworks implementation, sustainability and training plan
UN Environment works in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Convention on Biological Diversity to assist the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to meet their commitments under the agreement.
