Caspian littoral states have gathered in Astrakhan to celebrate Caspian Sea Day and the 2017 Year of the Environment in Russia!
On the agenda is Expansion of cooperation on environmental monitoring, climate change and oil pollution under the Tehran Convention, with a link to the Global Goals.
The purpose of the event is to discuss the role and activities of the Tehran Convention and its Protocols as an effective mechanism for achieving environmentally sustainable development of the Caspian Sea region taking into account the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
To achieve this goal, it is necessary to focus on:
- The principles of environmental activities in the region and improvement the efficiency of cooperation among the Caspian littoral countries within the framework of the Tehran Convention to achieve sustainable development;
- Discussion of the Tehran Convention mechanisms, such as the SCAP, NCAP, EMP, interaction with the private sector, including oil and gas industry;
- Lessons learnt from and objectives set for the participation of public from the Caspian littoral countries in addressing environmental issues, including public participation in EIA procedures in the Caspian Sea region.
The meeting is supported by UN Environment, which hosts the interim Secretariat of the Tehran Convention.
