Who said that doing something positive for the environment cannot be fun?
Thanks to a partnership between UN Environment and Energy Floors, visitors at the UN pavilion at EXPO 2017 can test this for themselves.
The Sustainable Dance Floor produced by Energy Floors converts kinetic energy into electricity. This powers a camera taking the dancers’ photo, allowing users to see the results of their green actions before their eyes.
If used together in a nightclub, 1000 people dancing energetically for an hour could produce 20 kWh of electricity – roughly equivalent to powering a television for 60 hours for example!
The floor can be used as part of a microgrid with other green technology solutions. Another product produced by Energy Floors - a solar tile - combines kinetic movement with solar panels. This could be used at shopping malls, airports and other places with high footfall.
The theme to the 2017 edition of EXPO in Astana, Kazakhstan is Future Energy.
Other than the energy floor, UN Environment is also partnering with the Solar Impulse pioneer Prof Bertrand Piccard and Government of Switzerland at EXPO to showcase options and solutions for a clean energy future. A high-level dialogue event will today explore the health, environment and economic benefits of clean energy and ways of speeding up the transition on the ground.
