MEDIA INVITATION: UNEP Holds Special Session on Environment and Human Health

A quarter of the global disease burden is caused by environmental factors, with 7 million people dying as a result of air pollution and further 500,000 perishing from exposure to chemicals, according to the World Health Organization.

UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner will introduce to Member States, at a Special Session of the Committee of Permanent Representatives meeting, highlights of the findings of a report entitled Healthy Environment, Healthy People, due for launch at the 2nd UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-2), next May.

The ongoing meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives, which is made up of 300 delegates representing all UN Member States and major groups, will consider key items on the UNEA-2 agenda with focus on furthering action on delivering the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and addressing the environment-health nexus.

Journalists attending will have the opportunity to interview UN experts, ministers and high-level representatives of UNEP Member States.
