UNEP Executive Director Accepts Appointment to Lead Oxford Martin School

Oxford, 24 February 2016 - The University of Oxford has announced that UN Environment Programme Executive Director Achim Steiner will become the next Director of the Oxford Martin School beginning September 1.

The Oxford Martin School is a world-leading centre of pioneering interdisciplinary research to address the most pressing global challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. It was, founded in 2005, and is named after Dr James Martin (1933-2013), who established the school with the largest benefaction made to Oxford in its history. The School invests in research that cuts across disciplines to tackle a wide range of science, technology and policy issues such as food security, pandemics, climate change and inequality whilst engaging global leaders across all sectors to turn ideas into action.

In accepting the appointment, Achim Steiner said, "I am deeply honoured to be offered the opportunity to lead the Oxford Martin School into its second decade of pioneering research and thought leadership. James Martin's vision of a unique platform for interdisciplinary research on the great challenges of the 21st century, and dialogue with global leaders across all sectors of society remains urgent and compelling."
