UNEP introduces its Methane Alert and Response System (MARS)

UNEP

MARS is an initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory, in collaboration with the International Energy Agency and Climate and Clean Air Coalition, that aims to scale up global efforts to detect and act on major emissions sources in a transparent manner. MARS identifies major methane emissions events using space-based methane-detecting instruments, notifies relevant stakeholders of the detection expediently, and helps companies and governments mitigate and learn from the events. UNEP is working with different stakeholders to roll out MARS during its pilot phase between January and June 2023.
