The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Country Office in Mexico started operations in May 2011. It manages a portfolio of more than 20 projects and initiatives, supporting the National Development Plan. The Country Office has mainstreamed environmental variables in diverse sectors such as agriculture, energy, finance, industry, health, education, and tourism.

UNEP Mexico Office has established strategic collaborations with the Government of Mexico on issues such as climate change, renewable energy, biodiversity, sustainable management of chemicals, and green economy through the design of public policies and has provided support in high-level dialogues, projects, technical assistance, and studies.

The Country Office also develops projects and initiatives with subnational governments, private sector, academia and civil society to promote the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. One example of these partnerships is the Mexico without Plastic Alliance, a platform of more than 200 NGOs working towards the ban of single-use plastics, in line with the Clean Seas campaign.

UNEP Mexico supports the establishment of a project portfolio on climate change and disaster risks management in the framework of the “Comprehensive Development Plan (PDI) of the Northern Countries of Central America and Mexico”, an initiative led by the Government of Mexico and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) to reduce migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras by promoting new investments and sustainable development in such countries.
