An Eye on Methane

Authors: UNEP

Human-caused methane emissions are responsible for roughly a third of the planet’s current warming. Reducing these emissions is the fastest, most cost-effective way to slow global warming in the near-term as we decarbonize.

Launched in 2021, UNEP’s An Eye on Methane series tracks global progress scaling data-driven methane solutions. The series is produced by UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), which provides open, reliable and actionable data to the individuals who can act to reduce methane emissions. This includes data from industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), satellites through the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), IMEO-supported scientific studies around the globe and more.
