Buildings and construction

UNEP works with partners to sustainably transform the buildings and construction sector to limit its environmental impact, as well as contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Buildings are a heavyweight for climate action, responsible for around 37 per cent of energy and process-related CO2 emissions and over 34 per cent of energy demand.

Mitigation policies in buildings and constructions can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% in developed countries and up to 80% in developing countries, and help lift up to 2.8 billion people out of energy poverty in developing countries. Yet, the gap between buildings’ actual decarbonization performance and the desired pathway is widening. With 50% of the buildings in 2050 yet to be built, urgent shifts in the way we conceive, build and use our buildings is crucial.
