About the Global Environment Outlook

The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) flagship assessment of the state of the planet. It represents the work of hundreds of leading environmental scientists, exploring in unparalleled detail how our environment is changing and, even more importantly, what we can do about it.

First published in 1997, GEO equips policymakers with the latest science to tackle environmental challenges and crises, including climate changenature and biodiversity loss, desertification, and pollution and waste. It examines how well current policies are working and how decision-makers and communities around the globe can act together to achieve a better, more sustainable future.

Connecting science and policy, GEO provides science for policy action.

Why it Matters

In an age of environmental uncertainty, GEO offers hope and direction. It connects science with real-life experience and policymaking, showing that a better future is still within reach. Because the choices we make today will shape the world of tomorrow.

GEO assessments analyze how finance and economic, materials and waste, energy systems, consumption patterns, and policies shape our environment, and how smarter decisions can lead to better outcomes. Combining the best available science with policy expertise, they report problems and  identify opportunities for change.
