Why Jason Momoa is committed to saving the seas

When Jason Momoa was a boy, he dreamed of becoming a marine biologist.

While he eventually turned to acting, the star of Aquaman and Dune says he never lost his passion for the seas.

“Without a healthy ocean, life on our planet as we know it will not exist,” said Momoa, who earlier this year was named the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Global Ambassador for Life Below Water.

The actor, a native Hawaiian, allowed cameras behind the scenes in the leadup to the announcement, talking about his passion for saving the planet and what he hopes to accomplish as a UNEP Ambassador. Check out the video above for more.

Momoa’s appointment comes with the ocean under severe pressure from pollution, overfishing and the climate crisis. For example, if humanity does not reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit climate change, nearly all of the world’s coral reefs, havens for 25 per cent of all marine life, could be lost by the end of the century.
