This document presents the mission, activities and achievements of GEMS/Water during its 50 years history, summarizing reports and studies published at international level and by institutions and scientists in participating countries. It also looks ahead to some of the challenges for global water quality monitoring and the strategies and activities needed to help achieve good ambient water quality as the programme continues to evolve.
