Contribute to the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Island Biodiversity Programme of Work by supporting an integrated ecosystem approach to biodiversity conservation management at local level in four Pacific countries.

The Overall Goal of the project is that by 2013 Jordan has a workable and transparent national biosafety framework, in line with its national development priorities and international obligations.

To advance implementation of the PIPA Management Plan 2010 - 2014 through a twin focus on: (i) Core Operation (capacity, infrastructure, zonation, enforcement,tourism, monitoring, evaluation) and Strategic Outcomes (atoll restoration, reverse fishing license, World Heritage site management, climate change adaptation), and (ii) to design and operationalise PIPA's Sustainable Financing System.

To assist the Republic of Tajikistan to implement its National Biosafety Framework (NBF) in order to comply with the Cartagena Protocol

To ensure data-driven policy design and implementation by facilitating and mainstreaming biodiversity information into decision-making and policy development processes

To Assist GEF-Eligible Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety in Africa to prepare and make timely submission of their Second National Reports on measures that each party has taken to implement the Protocol in line with Article 33

To assist Nigeria through capacity building activities to address identified gaps in legal, technical and adminstrative measures in ensuring compliance to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

Institutional, individual; and systemic capacities of stakeholders are increased to effectively implement the Biological Diversity Act and the Rules to achieve biodiversity conservation through implementing ABS agreements in India.

Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in line with national priorities and obligations to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

The Overall Goal of Syrian implementation of National Biosafety Framework project is that by the end of this project, Syria has in place a comprehensive, workable and transparent national biosafety framework, in line with its national needs and priorities as well as its international obligations.

To enable Afghanistan to better meet its immediate obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity, especially in relation to Article 6 by developing a National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, which incorporates the decisions and work programmes of the Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and submit it to the CBD Secretariat.

a)To make recommendations on how a future NBSAP should be like (without revising the NBSAP itself) according to new information already collected by the NCSA process and other processes. b)To carry out any additional assessment of capacity development needs required for the effective and efficient implementation of the priority objectives of the NBSAP.

To have a workable and transparent national biosafety framework in place in Peru that will contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity by enabling full implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB) and of national biosafety regulations.

To assist Madagascar to put in place a functional and transparent national biosafety framework, in accordance with national development priorities, and to fulfill its obligations as a Party to the Cartagena Protocol, and other related international instruments.

To assist Ecuador to have a workable and transparent national biosafety framework in place, to fulfill its obligations as a Party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and thus contribute to ensuring an adequate level of protection of biodiversity and human health from modern biotechnology.

The GEF biodiversity add-on project contains three main objectives: a) Capacity assessment for Taxonomy and revision : To carry out any additional assessment of capacity development needs required for the effective and efficient implementation of the priority objectives of the NBSAP. This is in accordance with the GEF Guidelines for Additional Funding of Biodiversity Enabling Activities (Expedited Procedures) issued in February 2000 and CoP Decisions II/7, IV/1 D, V/9 (priority), VI/5, VI/8, VI/23, VI/24 of the Conference of the Parties. b) Capacity assessment for ABS: To undertake in depth consultations on Access to Benefit Sharing (ABS) and Taxonomy as guided by the GEF in the 2000 guidelines for expedited procedures for Add on funds in the area of Biodiversity enabling activities. c) Development of a national CHM: To further develop the capacity of the CHM to improve the availability and dissemination of biodiversity-relevant information at both national and regional levels.
